Frequently Asked Questions

Can I see the engraving layout before my order moves to production?

Yes you can, and we encourage you to do so. We want your gift to be perfect. Make sure to request that a proof of the engraving layout be faxed to you for your approval at the time of order placement. However, you should remember that the time you take to approve the layout is not included in our quoted production time.

What if the engraving is spelled wrong on my order?

We only engrave exactly what you order. Therefore it is important that you double-check the spelling and grammar of the text in your order. If you find an error after your order is placed, call us immediately and we will work with you to correct the problem.

How much engraving can I put on my award?

Each item has a maximum number of lines available for engraving. We usually suggest between twenty and twenty-five letters per line. Sometimes artwork or a logo replaces available lines of engraving.

However, you may engrave whatever fits on a line. The order is completely driven by what you like or need. We will make recommendations as to what we think works best for each recognition item. Remember, you can always request a proof of the layout before we begin any engraving.

When I submit my artwork for engraving, are there any special guidelines that I should follow?

Yes, there are. View our Artwork Guidelines

“May I speak with Joan?”

A common misconception of Joan's Trophy & Plaque Co. is that the owner is named “Joan.” While that was true 32 years ago, the current owners’ names are Don and Diana Gustin. When Don Whitesall founded a small trophy shop in 1970 he named the business after his wife, Joan. Don and Diana bought the business seven years later and kept the reputable name. However, our sales staff does have a good laugh every time a customer asks to speak with Joan or calls and says, “Thanks, Joan.”

What is a setup charge?

A setup charge entails preparing the items to be engraved. This includes that a fixture hold the item securely during the engraving process. If an additional location is to be engraved, a second setup charge may be required to reposition the item for engraving. If an order has more than one item being purchased with the same message engraved on each, only one setup fee is applicable unless there are any changes made between the items, such as name or title.

What affects a setup charge?

In addition to the amount of locations being engraved, the item engraved, such as a cylinder or flat item, affects setup. Arched lettering, ornate fonts, and whether the engraving is filled with enamel or simply oxidized after engraving, also affect setup charges. At Joan's Trophy & Plaque Co., we have the ability to engrave most materials, but the engraving process varies from piece to piece. We engrave wood, stone, glass, leather, stainless steel, non-ferrous materials, and many plastics.

Do you engrave items that are not sold by Joan's Trophy & Plaque Co.?

Yes, we will engrave an item that was not purchased at Joan's Trophy & Plaque Co. The engraving fee is dependent on the item and the engraving process. Most often we engrave jewelry. Engraving is one of the additional services that we provide besides being a retailer of trophies, plaques, and advertising specialty and promotional items.
